12/15/2008 SBA Registry Approval
SBA Registry Approval
Jet-Black International is proud to announce that we have been approved for the SBA National Registry. Details of this registry can be found at http://www.franchiseregistry.com/Registry/
"SBA’s new Franchise Registry is a good example of helping small businesses owners through cooperation between government and industry. The dedicated efforts of SBA employees, franchisees, franchisors, and lenders have led to streamlined eligibility guidelines and operating procedures that will reduce costs and processing time and help SBA serve its customers better.
The Registry lists names of franchise companies whose franchisees enjoy the benefits of a streamlined review process for SBA loan applications. Loan applications for registered franchisors can be reviewed and processed quickly and efficiently. Small business owners get better service and quicker loans."
Note: Listing on this registry means that the franchise agreement does not impose unacceptable control provisions on a franchisee (which could result in affiliation with a franchisor). The lender and/or SBA must still consider and evaluate, with respect to each application for SBA financing, factors such as general eligibility, creditworthiness, conflicts of interest, character, use of proceeds, and discrimination.

Asphalt pavement is the surprise leader in the recycling of various materials
From http://www.hotmix.org/recycling.php
What’s recycled the most? While Americans are accustomed to thinking about recycling their newspapers and beverage containers, the most widely recycled product in terms of both percentage and tonnage is actually asphalt pavement.
According to a report issued by the Federal Highway Administration and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, 80 percent of the asphalt pavement that’s removed each year during widening and resurfacing projects is reused as part of new roads, roadbeds, shoulders and embankments. In contrast, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the recycling rates are 60 percent for aluminum cans, 56 percent for newsprint, 37 percent for plastic soft drink bottles, 31 percent for glass beverage bottles and 23 percent for magazines.
"Asphalt pavement admittedly isn’t prominent on the public’s radar screen for recycling. But every year, approximately 73 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) are reused, or nearly twice as much as the combined total of 40 million tons of recycled paper, glass, aluminum and plastics," said Mike Acott, president of the National Asphalt Pavement Association NAPA.
Relatively few people outside the pavement industry, however, know the extent of asphalt pavement recycling. In a survey commissioned by NAPA, Americans ranked asphalt pavement as being recycled the least among nine materials. (The others were aluminum, glass, paper, plastic, rubber, steel, wood and yard waste.)
EPA figures show that Americans recycle less than half of their discarded paper and less than one-third of their discarded aluminum and glass. Overall, only 28 percent of items in the municipal solid waste stream were recycled in 1997, the latest year for which the EPA has figures. The EPA has established a target recycling goal of 35 percent of municipal solid waste by the year 2005.
"For the asphalt pavement industry already to have an 80 percent recycling rate is quite impressive. The recycling of asphalt pavement is an everyday business practice," Acott said.
Acott noted that using RAP has economic benefits for taxpayers, as well as environmental benefits. "Using RAP results in lower costs. We use less virgin material and, by avoiding trips to the landfill, we use less diesel fuel. Considering today’s fuel prices, these savings add up considerably for taxpayers on public road projects," Acott said.
Other findings from NAPA’s survey help portray the state of recycling in America. For example, 46 percent of Americans rated their own interest in recycling as high or very high, while 33 percent said it was average and 20 percent said it was low or very low.
They gave even lower marks to their community’s interest in recycling. Only 36 percent rated their community’s interest as high or very high, while 37 percent said it was average and 23 percent said it was low or very low.
Interest in recycling was higher in the Northeast and West than in the rest of the country.
Most Americans take part in at least some sort of recycling program. The survey showed that more than three-quarters (77 percent) said they recycle at least some aluminum cans. About two-thirds (67 percent) said they recycle newspapers, along with 65 percent who said they recycle plastic bottles; 60 percent, glass bottles; 58 percent, magazines; 55 percent, plastic bags, 54 percent, tin cans; and 53 percent who said they recycle white paper.

Jet-Black sponsors National High School Wrestling Tournament
Jet-Black International, Inc. partners with the National High School Coaches Association as a prominent sponsor of the annual National High School Wrestling Tournament. The qualifier of this annual tournament takes on the 1st and 2nd place state champions within all weight classes from each of the 50 states and a few countries.
This tournament attracts nearly 1,200 of the best high school wrestlers and over 300 high school and 200 college wrestling coaches. Along with Jet-Black, other sponsors include Navy Seals, National Guard, and anonymous parties. Jet-Black has been a sponsor for the National High School Coaches Association since 2004.
Andy Hoiland and Doug Hoiland, Jet-Black founders, have been in the asphalt business since 1987 and currently have franchise locations in 20 states.
Jet-Black's sponsorship of this tournament lies close to the heart of these brothers as they wrestled in Minnesota in the 1980s. Jet-Black also has a strong history of hiring numerous high school wrestling seniors, college wrestlers, coaches and teachers in the last 20 years.
The Hoilands were brought up by parents who were veteran teachers of 25 and 30 years. Their mother taught K-6 Special Education while their father taught a high school DECA program. The Hoiland's passion for wrestling and their parents' dedication to teaching and education has lead them to sponsor school athletics year after year.
Jet-Black has had the priviledge of sponsoring the annual National High School Wrestling Tournament through the donation of driveway and parking lot maintenance services, as well as bulletin, flyer, and website advertisements.
01/01/2007 Outswimming the sharks: You're as young as you work
Find out how a lifetime of employment might improve your odds of a longer life.
Harvey Mackay
Jim Cantalupo had been CEO of McDonald's for little more than a year when he died of a heart attack last April at age 60. Who knows what was on the minds of McDonald's board when they picked their next CEO? Maybe they thought that a vigorous younger person could be the best insurance policy against another jolt to the CEO slot. In any case they chose a 44-year-old named Charles Bell.
After less than a month on the job, Bell learned he had cancer. In less than a year he was dead. Bell did great work for the short time he was at the helm. Still, youth is no guarantee that you will live out your employment contract. Bell's replacement? The 60-year-old James Skinner. How do I read that move? Go for the quality. Forget about age.
When I was in Athens for the Olympics last summer I noticed something unusual. The gold-medal winners in many events were older than the winners I had seen four years earlier in Sydney. That wasn't true for every competition, but some of the numbers will knock your socks off.
Here's a sampling of the 2000/2004 Olympic comparisons. The baseball gold medalists average 11/2 years older. In canoe/kayak slalom, the winners were two years older. In soccer, the average winners age was more than two years higher. And - hang on to your saddle - the average age for the equestrian dressage gold medalists was nine years higher. It jumped from 35 to 44.
It's easy to assume that championship athletes are forever younger. New York Times columnist David Leonhardt speculated on the age trend before the 2004 games:
"The shift has helped to alter athletes' and scientists' understanding of when the human body peaks. For years, people assumed that the early and mid-20s marked the last time that athletes could run their fastest or jump their highest."
That's proving not to always be the case.
What does this all mean for folks who jockey desks, not thoroughbreds? The perils of age often are a matter of attitude:
* How many times have you not applied for a job because you figured this was "younger people's" work? Have you stopped learning about new technology?
* Have you dropped subscriptions to trade journals? Do you spend your laptop time playing electronic backgammon instead of surfing for industry trends? And do you justify this all by saying, "I'm just punching the clock till they put me out to pasture?"
* What sort of company do you keep? Do you socialize with younger coworkers? Do you know who the rising stars are within your firm or your industry? Do you stay in touch with them? Great champs have super sparring partners and pacesetters. Sedentary is as sedentary does. Mix with young to stay young.
* Have you done something serious about starting that business you always dreamed of? A few years back, a 53-year-old guy named Ray Kroc did. He called it McDonald's.
Mackay's Moral: A lifetime of employment might improve your odd of a longer life.
